Report: Richard Sherman played at 80% for the 49ers in 2018

The team expects an even better version of Sherman for 2018

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated had an interesting tidbit in his MMQB this morning. He noted that San Francisco 49ers CB Richard Sherman was never really healthy in 2018. Here’s the excerpt:

One thing to watch: I’m told that Richard Sherman was at no better than 80% last year, and he only got there after significant improvement in early November, right around when the Niners played the Giants. As such, San Francisco expects a much improved version of the former All-Pro, which would give the roster a boost at a position where Ahkello Witherspoon struggled last year, and Jason Verrett was added last month. Another thing that should help: Sherman had surgery to have sutures, initially put in as part of the rehab process, removed from his heel after the season, and he’s felt a lot better since.

I bet if we asked Sherman himself he wouldn’t make any excuses. If 2018 was considered a down year for the former All-Pro, then the Niners are in good shape. Sherman was still good last year. If he was holding back because he wasn’t 100%, the secondary is in good shape. How Sherman moves will be something to keep an eye on as training camp and the season approaches.

If Sherman slightly improves his play from last year, the Niners have a really good corner. If his play sniffs the days of a few years ago when Sherman was fully healthy, look out.
