2019 NN Community Mock Draft 1st Round (Picks 21-32)

We’re back again for the final installment of the first round of the annual Niners Nation Community Mock Draft! As always, bring the debate, dissent, praise and smack...but let’s keep it civil. Stay tuned this week for rounds 2-7 in separate installments...

21. Seattle Seahawks (O Liner): Nasir Adderley, S, Delaware

With the departure of Earl Thomas, the Legion of Boom is no more. But there’s plenty of reason for hope: the Griffin brothers, Jarran Reed, and Bobby Wagner are still there, and of course, Frank Clark. But the secondary needs new blood; Tedric Thompson isn’t going to cut it. Adderley is the best single high in this class and it isn’t even close. With him on board, the D won’t skip a beat.

22. Baltimore Ravens (Surfer2099): Hakeem Butler, WR, Iowa State

At 6’5," Butler will make an easy target for Lamar Jackson. The Ravens are in need of WR1, and Butler can be that guy for them. Draft Network describe his capabilities as a "red zone and back shoulder monster. True ‘power forward’ receiver who is a nightmare as he's receiving the catch. Has plucked the ball off the forehead of defenders above the rim. Knows how to leverage himself and box out. Super physical."

The Ravens are in need of wide receivers. So much so that Draft Network has the WR listed as both a primary and secondary need for the Ravens. Butler will be a weapon for Lamar Jackson.

23. Houston Texans (Riqv): Dalton Risner, OL, Kansas State

The reasoning is simple: they need to protect Watson, and need someone to do so for years to come. Dalton Risner may not be the most athletic, as his footwork can show sometimes, but he has good technique, is smart, and is a finisher. He excelled at pass protection while at Kansas State. We can expect him to start his career at RG or RT. It may not be the sexiest of picks, but it addresses a need and gives them some versatility.

24. Oakland Raiders (Mertons Merkin): Greedy Williams, CB, LSU

This guy shouldn't fall this far, but he's a Raider now. Oakland needs a little bit of everything. Things changed for me a little bit when Kyler Murray fell into my lap. As the GM of the Raiders with Murray on board, I’m a little bit less worried about plugging holes, and a little more interested in getting the best possible player at my pick. Because with a rookie QB in this system, I’m pretty sure we are going to be drafting at the top again next year. Forget plugging holes, let’s build a foundation.

Williams is a super high level player, with athleticism and savvy. He's going to be Pro Bowl caliber, and he's sitting here at 24. I can't pass on that, even if there appear to be more pressing needs. It's a rebuild, after all. Greedy starting next year, and he's going to be good immediately. When you have as many early picks, and as many roster holes as the Raiders have, forget ranking your needs. Take the best player at a position where you are not strong. Take the best playmakers over the biggest needs, and you’ll be in a better position in future drafts.

25. Philadelphia Eagles (GreatOden’sRaven): Jeffrey Simmons, IDL, Mississippi State

The Eagles are already loaded but they need depth and some game changers. Lining Simmons up with Fletcher Cox makes for a hell of a duo. I realize he has some character concerns and injury history, but IMO Simmons skill level and talent are on par with Ed Oliver. It's a risk a team like the Eagles can take because they are so well constructed at the moment. This is both a BPA and a need for the Eagles. As their defense ages they need fresh blood to come in and make a difference. If they can keep Simmons focused and engaged, they could have a second "Fletcher Cox" on the line. Poor Dwayne Haskins, he might actually die back there.

My original plan was to take Ford or Risner to shore up the line, but they both went early. I was also interested in Adderley but he was long gone. The big needs for the Eagles are along the line so I suspect we will be looking at Guards and Tackles later in the draft. Safety and LB are also a need too.

26. Indianapolis Colts (cgun): TJ Hockenson, TE, Iowa

Andrew Luck needs offensive weapons not named TY Hilton who produce reliably. Jack Doyle is in a contract year and, while Ebron emerged as a legit red zone threat, he has never been a reliable pass catcher. TJ Hockenson is an elite caliber offensive weapon who can threaten defenses in multiple ways and who fills an emerging roster need. TJ blocks, he runs incredible routes, he catches, he offers an immense catch radius and he YACs. He is the top TE prospect in the draft, the number 5 ranked overall prospect on Daniel Jeremiah’s big board, and in a draft that feels light on high end talent, TJ has a chance to become one of the best TE in the entire NFL. The Colts didn’t come to this party expecting TJ to be there at 26 but it wasn’t hard to adjust plans and set up TJ to be a centerpiece of their offense going forward.

27. Oakland Raiders (Mertons Merkin): Devin Bush, LB, Michigan

Don't let his height fool you; Devin Bush is a monster. Linebackers are just small now, and that's how it's going to be. There will be times that he gets washed downstream, and there will be times when he misses tackles because he's put himself in position to miss a tackle that most other linebackers couldn't sniff. But there are going to be big plays out of Bush, too. Lots of them. He's athletic, and he's smart. He's always in the proper position. This solves a major problem. Oakland has a pretty glaring need at linebacker, and there are only two in this draft that can start week one of next season. White might be the one with the measurables, but I don't know that he's the best one. Bush has instincts to burn, and is a steal this late in the first. Keep in mind that I’ve been trying to maximize my picks by taking BPA. That’s caused me to miss out on getting a high level edge player this year. So be it. Devin Bush’s excellent blitz ability will help to alleviate some of the problems my draft strategy has caused.

28. Los Angeles Chargers (JUICEcyk): Dexter Lawrence, IDL, Clemson

Dexter Lawrence is the perfect guy for this San Diego team. With Dalton Risner already off the board, San Diego would change their direction towards the departure of Corey Liguet. Lawrence partners with Brandon Mebane on the interior DL. Lawrence would put so many opposing guards and centers in gridiron hell with Melvin Ingram and the better Bosa.

29. Kansas City Chiefs (sarf London niner): Amani Oruwariye, CB, Penn State

The Chiefs are pretty much set on offense - nobody at the back end of Round 1 seems likely to be a significant day 1 upgrade to what surely will be a minimum top 3 offense. On the other side of the ball, however, their unbalanced all-sacks/no coverage defense was bad in 2018 even before they lost their two top Edges in the offseason. With all the top Edges off the board early, however, restocking here at Edge would be a reach. The LB core needs real help, and missing out on Devin Bush by two picks was a blow - a trade up might have been considered. But as everybody who watched the AFC Championship game saw, the Chiefs need help in the secondary. With Mathieu shoring up the safety positions, Oruwariye can be a day 1 starter opposite Fuller, perhaps turning the Chiefs' secondary from a weakness to a strength.

30. Green Bay Packers (Fred Mercury): Noah Fant, TE, Iowa

Fant gives Aaron Rodgers a big super athletic target at all levels. Though there are more of them in the NFL than college, only the most exceptionally athletic defenders can keep up with Fant. While not as physically imposing, he might end up being the matchup nightmare that hypothetical teammate Jimmy Graham once was. I was tempted to draft a guard, to compliment newly signed Billy Turner, who would presumably fill in at left guard. However, I liked the idea of leaving a hole at right guard for defenders to walk through to pummel Rodgers. Also considered: Edge Chase Winovich.

31. Los Angeles Rams (Stevesrus): Garrett Bradbury, C, North Carolina State

The Rams have serious O-line issues; they have currently lost two different Offensive linemen to free agency this year (John Sullivan, Rodger Saffold). While Andrew Whitworth is 37 years old. This is why they need to take an offensive lineman with their first selection. Garrett Bradbury is someone who could step right in and fill a void on the interior of the offensive line. Whether that is at center at guard, he is a smaller but more athletic interior O-line. He is a good fit for any zone running scheme, which will fit right into Sean Mcvay’s system.

32. New England Patriots (hawktomegoose): Chase Winovich, Edge, Michigan

My heart broke when Fant was taken just 2 picks earlier, but Winovich is a solid get and should help compliment an older Bennett. He just seems like a Patriot - underappreciated, unheralded, good character, team player, consistent motor, good-to-great-but-not-elite skill set that combines with effort and brains to produce a consistent pass rusher to add to this defense.

Also considered Tillery, a couple corners, and a number of receivers but I think the depth at the WR spot will allow us to address the need next round.
