Aldon Smith arrested. Yet again.

There’s rock bottom, and then there’s 50,000 feet beneath the earth.

Look, every time I have to bring up former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, I hope that I’m going to talk about something positive. The reality is, when I bring up Aldon Smith, more often than not it means something bad happened. And yet again, Aldon Smith has been arrested. Yet again it’s for DUI. Yet again, we have to wonder how far this can go.

This recent arrest had Smith stopped by police in Mission, Kansas for a traffic violation and later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The arrest marks his fourth DUI. Four (4). Some people don’t make it past their second. Smith has a quad-fecta of DUI arrests. That’s not counting his domestic violence arrest, among other things like violating conditions of bail.

Smith’s Wikipedia page lists him as a “former American football outside linebacker” and it’s sickening to see ‘former’ listed. Anyone who watched this cat on the field saw the talent that he had. He had a chance, no he was on his way, to being one of the best to ever play the position. But addictions are a nasty thing. Every post I write about this I hope he can get some help, and once again I’m hoping that he can get the help he needs. I said the other day that he might have more arrests than career sacks, and while it was a snide comment, it’s something I hope doesn’t happen. At the rate he’s going, though.

Hopefully Smith can find some help and get himself cleared. There’s rock bottom, and then there’s 50,000 feet beneath the earth. Smith is heading to the latter. And it doesn’t have to be this way.

Hopefully this recent arrest is the wake-up call he needs.
