Even though Kwon Alexander is still rehabbing from his ACL injury from last season, he is trying to build a partnership with his running mate Fred Warner. Alexander was signed in the offseason and gives the defense a lot of potential in the middle of the field when he comes back from the injury. Alexander is still only 24 years old and pairing him with the 2nd year Warner could give the team a unit to continue to build on for the near future. The speed those guys have is what is needed in the modern NFL defense. They will be tasked to not only play the run, but they must be able to cover running back, tight ends, and slot receivers.
The competition to be the backup for Jimmy Garoppolo will be a top battle in training camp. CJ Beathard was the #2 entering last season, but Nick Mullens’ play last season in place of CJ was very impressive. That play does not ensure that Nick is the #2 this season, but it should help. It is not a given that the 49ers will have 3 quarterbacks on the roster heading into the season, so the battle between Beathard and Mullens could result in one of them being left off. Unless CJ has a great training camp and Nick has a terrible one, the play of Nick last season should give him the advantage to be Jimmy’s backup.
