San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is still in the process of working back from his ACL injury and has yet to do any team-related activities that require contact. If you ask players that have suffered these types of injuries that sideline them, they’ll tell you that taking that first hit is their biggest worry. Once they get hit, all the butterflies go away, and it’s back to playing football.

Garoppolo will be working with one of the more prominent QB coaches—Tom House—over the next month. Garoppolo opened up about getting hit:

“I think all of that will come with time. I’ll try to implement as many drills as I can during these 40 days or so. But, I think once until the bullets start flying and everything, then we’ll really see.”

Garoppolo knows that there’s no way to simulate getting hit. You won’t know until someone pops you.

Plenty of players will use the downtime between OTAs and training camp to get away. For example, Richard Sherman was in France earlier this week. I’m sure things were different for him this time last year as he was rehabbing as well. Jimmy G is using this time to make sure he’s on track to be a full participant when the 49ers report for training camp on July 26.

“During these 40 days, you do so many different things, physical, mental,” Garoppolo said. “You’re trying to recover at the same time [as] getting ready for training camp. I think just having the timing of the offense down, being in rhythm with the receivers that I’ll work with and everything, and just getting comfortable. It’s been a little while since I’ve been in 11-on-11 football, so just getting as comfortable as I can as quickly as I can.”

Speaking of timing, Garoppolo told us during minicamp that some of the 49ers receivers will be down in LA with him so they can get their timing down. It may not seem like much, but a few extra throwing sessions could go a long way.

Training camp is right around the corner. There will be rust. That’s inevitable. Seeing Garoppolo work through that, and get comfortable will happen in time, just as he mentioned.
