I don’t need to remind people here at Niners Nation that we are a big, big Alex Smith house. The 49ers went through a period of mediocrity and Smith was one of the few pieces that tried to hold things together. His professionalism is unparalleled and to this day his career is underrated for the things he had to deal with.
Which is why it was so gut-wrenching to see the guy fracture his leg the way he did back in 2018. Not just the fracture, but the complications after with it getting infected. The break was gruesome enough (I’m warning you, you don’t want to watch it), but to see him battling post-op issues when you think of everything he had to deal with in his career, it’s just something you don’t wish on people.
Well, the good news is, he’s progressing. Smith has been seen out and about with this huge robotic leg-brace thing on his leg and finally, finally some good news:

The last 8 months have been nothing short of crazy. Although it’s not over, today is a big milestone. We are shedding the weight Alex has been carrying (literally and figuratively). It’s one step closer to the goal. The resilience, determination and mental fortitude of this man is unmatched.
This does not mean Smith is going to be playing football this year (or ever again for that matter). This does mean that recovery is going in the right direction and Smith at least will be able to rehab the injury.
I don’t know the ramifications of Smith’s initial infections, but they were not good. Knowing that the brace is coming off is at least a sign that things are going according to plan.
Here’s hoping we see Smith on the field again.
