49ers will start training camp with four players on the PUP list

Jimmy G and Kwon Alexander will not play the first preseason game, either. As well as a Jason Verrett update.

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch spoke to the media on Thursday morning to talk about the San Francisco 49ers upcoming training camp, and everything that will be involved. The first announcement was the PUP list. The team is going to start with four players on the PUP list:

Jerick McKinnon

Garrett Celek

Weston Richburg

Jimmie Ward

McKinnon was doing fine until a recent “flare-up” with his knee. It doesn’t sound serious, but Shanahan stressed throughout the presser that they would be easing in a lot of the players that are knicked up, and plan on playing it safe. Shanahan also said that reps would be different this year, in an attempt to make sure guys stay healthy.

We’ve discussed Celek and Richburg’s injuries. Shanahan said he expects Ward to be back around the time they play Denver, in a couple of weeks.

Jimmy Garoppolo and Kwon Alexander will both be fully-cleared, but the plan is to ease both of them in as well. Shanahan confirmed that neither would play during the first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. He did not say whether the two would play during the rest of the preseason.

Lynch said Jason Verrett should be good to go as well. He said there would be some management on his reps, but Verrett will be out there. Shanahan said if you talked to the doctors and didn’t know about Verrett’s injury history, you’d have know idea with the way he looks out there running. He also mentioned how you’re not just going to throw him out there, but that he looks 100%.
