What. A. Mess. What a joke, really. In June, Marquise Goodwin won the “40 yards of Gold competition,” beating Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson. It was sketchy how quickly everything happened, and the event was put together. It was sketchy when we found out how big the purse was. Here we are, a month later, and Goodwin has yet to be paid. Supposedly, his reps are working toward getting his million-dollar check “soon,” per Pro Football Talk.
This smells like litigation. I wonder if Goodwin would pursue legal action, or if he would wait it out and “hope” his team can work something out. Goodwin isn’t the only one that can’t cash his check. Vikings receiver Jeff Badet has a $25,000 check for being a participant. Here’s what he had to say:
“I’ve still got the check in my wallet,” Badet said Tuesday, via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “I’m keeping it just in case. . . . I just heard a bank was saying there were zero dollars in an account that they wrote it to, so it’s just one big scam. I’m calling it one big scam.’”
Zero. Dollars. Yikes.
This would be a bigger story if more prominent names were involved. Unfortunately, players are once again exposed and taken advantage of. I’m sure we’ll have another update on this next month.
Okay, back to training camp.
