Day 4 of training camp was dominated by the defense as Jimmy Garoppolo finished 5 of 14. Richard Sherman stood out and that is an important sign for the 49ers defense. Last season he played well, but it did not look like he was all the way back from injury. Another offseason to work back to full health could do wonders for Sherman. A healthy Sherman with the added weapons at pass rusher should elevate the 49ers defense to the upper tiers of defenses in the league.
The 49ers secondary will also be getting reinforcements soon. Jimmie Ward was taken off the PUP list and participated in a walkthrough. The team will ease him back to the field. He will add depth to the secondary as long as he can stay healthy, which has been his biggest issue since coming into the league. The safety positions are still up for grabs and Tarvarius Moore was given an opportunity to play with the first team while splitting snaps with Adrian Colbert. Robert Saleh wants to give multiple guys looks to figure out the best two players to start at the safety spots.
Dee Ford and Nick Bosa did not participate in one on one drills, but participated in team drills. LB Dre Greenlaw suffered a hand laceration and was forced to leave practice as did Ahkello Witherspoon. Kyle Juszczyk, Jeff Wilson, and Joshua Garnett did not participate. The team has Wednesday off and will practice again on Thursday.
