San Francisco 49ers’ first-round draft pick Nick Bosa easily has one of the most anticipated rookie seasons around the league. Bosa can single-handedly propel the Niners defense to a level it hasn’t been to in years. When you take a player second overall, that’s the expectation. Unlike the last time the 49ers were selected in the top-five, Bosa is universally believed to be a top talent.
Early on during training camp, Bosa is giving the Niners tackles all they can handle. You’re seeing the beat writers that are at practice tweet out how Bosa is getting would-be sacks during team periods. Bosa is going to start. He is going to play a ton. Looking at rookie sack totals over the last five years, is it realistic to say he can surpass any of these guys?
2018-Bradley Chubb-12 sacks
2017-Carl Lawson-8.5 sacks
2016-Joey Bosa-10.5 sacks
2015-Preston Smith-8 sacks
2014-Aaron Donald-9 sacks
Chubb played across from Von Miller. He also had a three-sack game and a couple of two-sack games. All of the players on the list played next to an established pass rusher except for Aaron Donald, which, turns out, he’s pretty good.
This is probably the ballpark for Bosa. Anywhere between 8-12. If Bosa finishes the season with eight sacks that would be incredible for him and the defense. He has a chance to be that good, given his talent and surroundings. If the offense can build leads, he could really inflate his numbers. So, let’s hear your sack projections for Bosa in 2019?
