Welcome back to football! The San Francisco 49ers are in their fifth day of training camp, but an actual football game—a real football game— with a clock, hits, pads and announcers is happening tonight with the NFL’s annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The 49ers don’t kick off their preseason until next week, but in the meantime, the Denver Broncos and the Atlanta Falcons square off tonight at 5:00 p.m. PT.
OK, so it’s preseason. We all know everyone’s thoughts towards the preseason. The preseason does so well because we’ve been so dry with actual football games that we’ll eat up anything with a pigskin. That said, I don’t have anything else better to do. Let’s watch some football!
Well at least for the first thirty seconds to catch some of the starters for the first thirty seconds. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to go do something else after that. The game will still make good background noise.
The one thing to keep in mind tonight concerning the 49ers is the waiver wire. The rosters on the field are of some interest to the 49ers (and 29 other teams). Everyone will cut down 53 players, putting all the cuts (besides vested veterans) on the waiver wire. The 49ers have the No. 2 spot in waiver priority, which means they get anybody the Arizona Cardinals pass on. Right now, the 49ers themselves have difficult decisions to make with who to keep on their own 53-man roster. The thing is, they only have to wait behind Arizona to make any decisions on waivers, so if there was anyone they missed out on the first time the 49ers can bring him in then.
