There’s a lot of work left for the San Francisco 49ers after Saturday. While they managed to beat the Dallas Cowboys, it was a very strange game. But one thing needing addressed is the penalties.
The 49ers got 18 penalties on Saturday for a grand total of 216 yards. Over two football fields in yardage.
Ugh.
This isn’t record-setting, but it’s up there. Kyle found the closest thing to a record for penalty yards was set with Tennessee Titans vs. Baltimore Ravens at 212. Since this is a preseason game, I doubt it goes into the record books even if it is the record (some sources have said 300 yards in a game so I’m treading lightly on this declaration). Even if it’s not a record, it’s still disgusting.
Now whether preseason is considered concrete for record purposes is up for debate (it’s not), but the fact remains the 49ers had far too many penalties. If this were an actual gameday situation, the 49ers would have an even tougher time winning.
The 49ers coaching staff should feel free to pass around a rule book in this week’s practices with the Denver Broncos. Record or not, the number of penalties was more than simple mistakes, it’s atrocious. This isn’t pass interference penalties either. These are penalties like holding, jumping offsides, etc.
If the 49ers want any chance at 2019, they will need to clean this up immediately.
