Every training camp around the NFL some players go out and make a name for themselves during practice and the preseason. They know the odds are against them in regards to making the roster, so they are giving 100%, and it’s noticeable compared to the players that assume they have a spot on the team.
It doesn’t always work out, despite the hype. Sometimes it’s a number game, other times it’s the fact that as much effort as the player gave, it wasn’t enough. So, which long-shot player on the San Francisco 49ers are you pulling for this preseason?
For me, it’s easy. LB Azeez Al-Shaair and RB Austin Walter. I love their energy and effort. They both have an uphill battle considering linebacker and running back are relatively deep, but both players are also extremely athletic and offer upside. Walter doesn’t get too many carries during practice, but when he does, he’s usually breaking a big play. That happened routinely last week, which made Saturday’s performance a bit disappointing. I’ll be keeping an eye on Walter against Denver to see if he can make somebody miss 1-on-1 because the holes were there.
In the case of Al-Shaair, all he did during his college career at Florida Atlantic was rack up 146 tackles during his last full season. He fell in the draft due to injury, but we’re finding out pretty quickly that he can play. Will Al-Shaair be consistent enough over the next few weeks to stay around for the next few months? We’ll see. If Demeco Ryans has as strong of a voice as I think he does, Al-Shaair will be on the roster.
Who are you pulling for to make the roster come September that is currently on the bubble? Here is the tweet and what other people have said:
Who is a player on the 49ers that may be a long-shot to make the roster, but you're rooting for to make the team?
