The San Francisco 49ers returned to camp on Tuesday, and a couple of names were held out. One of which was quarterback C.J. Beathard who is competing with Nick Mullens for the backup quarterback job behind Jimmy Garoppolo. So in Beathard’s place, the 49ers put Wilton Speight, a rookie undrafted free agent who has had very few reps at training camp up to this point.
So how did he do? According to Jennifer Lee Chan, not awful. For what it’s worth, he went three for three in red-zone drills. That’s the only numbers I managed to find concerning Speight’s performance.
Meanwhile, Beathard is held out due to that thumb injury he sustained in the 49ers preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys where he bashed his hand against a helmet. It doesn’t appear to be anything serious. Nick Mullens took the lion’s share of backup snaps on Tuesday and we’ll what happens Wednesday in the backup quarterback battle.
The Niners Nation community seems to think Beathard is out and Mullens is in at backup quarterback. This has been a popular notion since the end of the 2018 season. Beathard lost his job last year due to a similar injury, so maybe today offered Mullens a chance to get some ground on Beathard Final.
I have attached a poll just in case to see what you think of Beathard in the backup battle.
