According to NBC Sports Matt Maiocco, the 49ers have filled cornerback Greg Mabin’s roster spot. Mabin sustained a calf injury on Wednesday. There’s no word just yet if Mabin will go on the injured reserved list, or if he was injured/waived. Mabin was a coin-flip to make the roster, with the ascension of Emmanuel Moseley and D.J. Reed, especially as Reed began to play on the outside more. We’ll provide more details as they become available.
Cornerback Quinten Rollins, who played 33 games with Packers from 2015-2017, is practicing today and has taken Mabin’s spot as well as his number on the roster. Rollins was a second-round draft pick by the Packers in 2015. He’s played a little bit of everywhere during his time in the NFL. His best position is at slot corner, and that’s likely where he will line up for the 49ers.
Rollins was never known for being the best athlete, but he is more of the “sound,” and “smart” type of player. In three seasons, he has 83 tackles, but his stats don’t look great. He’s given up a 69% completion percentage on 129 targets, along with eight touchdowns compared to just three interceptions and 12 passes broken up.
