Heart of a Champion

I was commenting on one of our thread Today and it started getting too long. So I made it into a Fanpost instead.

I was answering a question about our Offense. Gettinsilver posted this. And I watched the gifs he had in there. I still don’t know how to insert them suckers haha.

game situation and play calling

are also a big part of this. When playing from behind, we have to throw more and that leads to more sack pressure on qb. I’m assuming this year we’ll be playing from ahead, thus we can run more, and play-action passes will be even more effective, thus lessening the sack pressure on qb.

When we first hired Shannahan, I commented that his play calling in Atlanta reminded me of the old-time plays from the 70’s where the recivers ran long plays and qb had to spend a long time in pocket waiting for plays to open on deep throws downfield. We see quite a plays in this offense that require more than 2 or 2.5 seconds in the pocket, for example , example 2, example 3. These plays are double edged – they get big chuncks of yards, but expose qb longer in pocket. Shannhan knows this and it’s the reason why the ability to stand strong in pocket while facing pressure is one of the key qualities he looks for.

Anyways, I don’t think we’ll start winning this year until we start playing like we’re Champions. Most of all, having that Champion mindset in 4949.

We just have to get in a rhythm and keep moving the chains and just play catch like what we did when we had Montana and Rice. We get sacked because we move out from our scripted play’s and start looking around for more instead of taking what the defenses gives you. They just need to follow the play’s and string them together into drives.

In the past we used to string drives after drives and score. We had quick strike play’s like a slant to Rice or Taylor. Then we have play action’s that we set the run up with when they’re stacking the box. Sometimes Roger Craig sets up the play action. We attack the Defense on what they’re showing to us. We have Brent Jones as a 3rd option when our WR’s are covered. Sometimes he’s our 1st option depending on what the defense is giving us. But Montana dumps it off to him as an outlet. So the D has to account for him as well as for Rice and Taylor. We have Rathman as an outlet too along with Craig. But we keep moving the ball. At the end of the game we only have 1 or 2 drives that stalled. Then Young carried it through when Montana was gone. But after that we don’t have that offense anymore where we lean on Defenses and they tap out. Our defenses are great on our Dynasty years also.

So what’s the difference? You can compare our past to our current roster now. We can also compare it to our Harbaugh Year’s. And you can see where our shortcomings are coming from. It’s mainly in the execution. We can’t string together drives. We just need to practice our play’s over and over. Get our timing down. Get our urgency when we come in to practice. Everyone has to be in the same page. Be a professional like what our players showed in the past.

They talk about pursuit of perfection. But it’s all talk. I don’t see it. Walsh and Montana had it. They’re the epitome of that pursuit of excellence. If a play is off. They’ll stay longer in practice and run the play’s over and over until it’s perfect. They practice with speakers to simulate playing on the road. They’re on top of things.

We on the other hand come out in the beginning of the Season flat over and over. Like we’re not prepared. Like we didn’t practice enough. It’s embarrassing. They get paid more now than our past players. But they’re lackadaisical. No urgency. No accountability. Would Ward cut his pinky so he can play or take himself out of the Field? Would Tartt cut his pinky? Would Garnett? Would Bosa? Would Thomas? Would Armstead? Would Goodwin? They all should be embarrassed on wearing the uniforms that our past players wore.

I might be too hard on them. But enough is enough. It’s been too long since we’ve won a SUPERBOWL. Football is not that hard. They either want to win or are just here to collect a paycheck that they don’t even deserve. If they want to win then they have to work at it 24 hours a day.

The play’s are the same on what Montana and Walsh are using. Kyle and Garrapolo are using some of those old play’s. And they added more on top of that. Are Defenses better now? I don’t think so. You bring in the Chicago, NY, Buffalo, Dallas D of old etc.. and Offenses like the Patriots will be broken into pieces. Quarterbacks will be on stretchers… But our offense of the past finessed them. Punched them in the mouth and stood over them. Our D smashed those offenses of Elway’s, Kelly’s, etc.. maybe our Team needs to watch the films of our past Dynasty. So they know what to do. They need to know what being a Niner is all about. Having that heart of a Champion. Having that fight in them.

Draymond Green has it. He signed for less and early. If he waited he would have been the most sought after Free Agent next Year. He would have gotten the max of the max for what he showed during the playoffs. Why did he sign early and for less? Because he wanted to see what Steph, Klay and him are building through… Home grown talent has that heart for the Team to be successful. What do our Niners have? Do they practice with urgency? Do they perfect their craft? Or do they just show up and go through the motion and expecting to be crowned a Champion when the year is done? There’s got to be a plan. Our Dynasty Templet is there. It’s about Time they use it.
