The San Francisco 49ers already suffered a blow with Shon Coleman getting injured in their first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys and now the injury bug has gone to the starters. The Athletic’s Matt Barrows spotted 49ers right guard Mike Person in an orthopedic boot and on crutches. Yes, we already discussed this in the practice report for Friday, but given that Person is a starting guard, it’s worth bringing up again.
What the injury is, how it happened, and how long he’s going to be on crutches isn’t yet known.
So far, there hasn’t been any story on him going down during practice so details are a bit scarce on the origin of any of this. If there’s any position the 49ers can’t afford to keep losing, it’s the offensive line. Fortunately, in a later article, Barrows said that per Coleman’s agent, the injury isn’t anything serious.
If Person isn’t good to go after this, that would open things up for Joshua Garnett to potentially take the starting right guard spot. Najee Toran could also be in the mix. It’s not far fetched to think the 49ers final 2019 draft pick, tackle Justin Skule is given a try at guard also.
Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers will probably give some more detail about this sooner rather than later. Right now it’d be a good bet to assume he’s out for Monday Night’s game, but the extent after that is anyone’s guess.
