The winner of the ultimate battle is about to be announced. I’m talking about the San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback battle between Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard. Both participants have slugged it out in glorious preseason combat and now there must be a winner and that winner will be announced Monday.
In his conference call discussing the 49ers cut-down to the final 53-man roster. John Lynch said that a decision has been made and an announcement will come on Monday. The decision has not yet been communicated to Beathard or Mullens so now we wait.
The 49ers have been getting calls about backups but Lynch has said that no one was willing to meet the 49ers’ asking price for a backup. What the price is is yet to be determined.
It could be that the 49ers are still fielding calls across the league and doing some negotiating before making that announcement, or they want to attempt to not ruin one person’s weekend.
The 49ers have three quarterbacks on the roster and have no intention on releasing one so they’ll be in a good spot with depth for the 2019 season. Hopefully they don’t need to shuffle anyone in this time, but at least they have an answer regardless of who is backing up Jimmy Garoppolo.
