People get bored. That’s the only reason I can come up with as to why we’re talking about this. That said, it is a legit conversation, no matter how strange it may be. I root for things to talk about. So we’re going to talk about it.
Nick Mullens vs. Jimmy Garoppolo?
Look, I made a bold prediction to start the year there would be a Mullens/Garoppolo quarterback controversy, one that would be ended by Garoppolo. I never expected it would start in Week 1, and by extension, I never thought it would be put to rest a week later.
Or has it?
There’s been some chatter that the 49ers would want to move on to Nick Mullens. Evidence or sources within the 49ers suggesting the idea is non-existent, which means it’s simply speculation. This was going on long before the season started with some mindless assumptions. The 49ers would be looking to get Kirk Cousins in 2020 (which as I said is almost impossible).
There’s also a legitimate fanbase wanting Mullens as the starting quarterback. In the latest Better Rivals podcast, Oscar brings up a guy he plays basketball with who is dead-set on Nick Mullens as a starting quarterback(or at least, Jimmy G shouldn’t be the starter). They are out there, and maybe they have a point.
Garoppolo played “meh” in Week 1. Not bad enough where it was alarming (at least, when you think about what he’s been through), not good enough to anoint him the next in line to Joe Montana or Steve Young.
Then there’s Week 2. Take away that head-scratching interception from everything else, and I wouldn’t fault you for making comparisons to Montana. 68 percent completion? 297 yards and three touchdowns? Do you think that’s enough?
So it’s been two weeks. The chatter about benching Jimmy Garoppolo has died out just as it began. It’s doubtful this will be the last time teams will look to Garoppolo heading to the bench. The moment another below-average outing shows itself, things might heat up again. Or do they?
You’ve heard about this “controversy” what do you think. Do you think Jimmy Garoppolo has put an end to this “controversy”? Do you think the impressive showing against the Bengals was nothing more than scheme (let’s be fair, Marquise Goodwin catching a ball when there are no black jerseys on the TV screen in 4K is pretty much scheme)? Or do you need some more games like this to be sold?

Bench Garoppolo, start Nick Mullens. Mullens is the better option, even after Cincinnati
