Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon after the San Francisco 49ers had their walkthrough practice. Here are the players who did not practice:
DE Dee Ford (quad, day to day)
WR Trent Taylor (foot)
WR Jalen Hurd (back)
RB Tevin Coleman (ankle)
LT Joe Staley (leg)
SS Jaquiski Tartt (toe; not turf toe, day-to-day)
Shanahan said that the plan for Ford was for him not to practice the rest of the week, so he has a better shot at playing on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He mentioned how he was a little concerned since this injury was related to a setback Ford had in training camp but is “somewhat optimistic” that Ford will play Sunday. He said that the team would play it safe with Ford.
As for Tartt, he sustained a toe injury, not turf, thankfully, that has him day-to-day as well. Shanahan didn’t expound on Tartt’s injury, so we’ll see how that plays out the rest of the week. The defense can’t afford to lose Tartt.
Jimmie Ward will still be limited, as he is working back after having surgery a couple of weeks ago to repair his broken finger. Ward will likely play strong safety if Tartt has to miss time. Shanahan didn’t suggest that Tartt would need to miss any time, though.
Here is the Steelers injury report from today:

LB Anthony Chickillo (foot)
RB James Conner (knee)
