49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan met with the media on Monday and announced that CB Ahkello Witherspoon is expected to miss at least a month. Witherspoon had been playing fantastic in three games and was on his way to a Pro Bowl type season. The key here is “at least.” The team will get a second opinion from a foot specialist.
Shanahan mentioned that Emmanuel Moseley is next in line to start, but practice will determine who plays. It’ll likely come down to Moseley or Verrett.
Shanahan said he expects Jalen Hurd back against Browns for Week 5. Hurd had a pretty serious stress reaction, and that’s why he missed so much time.
Tevin Coleman will return next week as well. Shanahan said there’s a “good chance” Coleman plays Week 5. Shanahan said it’s tough to use four running backs in a game, but that’s a good problem to have.
Circling back to cornerback, the next four games are against the Browns, Rams, Washington, and the Panthers. Each of those teams has talented wide receivers and passing games that can hurt you through the air. Here is what Shanahan said regarding a trade:
We always look at the trade market and will continue to, but it’s got to make sense for us. How much does it help the team and how much does it help the organization moving forward. You think of the years in advance too in terms of the salary cap and draft picks.
This sucks. The defense was playing at a high level, and Witherspoon had a lot to do with that. Not just with great coverage, but Witherspoon was making plays in the run game as well. Look at one of the first couple of plays from the Steelers game. Witherspoon beats a block and makes a tackle for loss. Those are the plays you can’t replace. Get well soon, ‘Spoon.
What do you think the 49ers should do for the next month at cornerback?
