NFL: NFC Championship-Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

At the end of the 2017 season, the 49ers had just fired their 2nd head coach in 2 years and let go of their general manager Trent Baalke. They had just completed a 2-14 record and once again looked lost after the mini run of success they had just enjoyed before moving into Levi’s Stadium. The front office decided to start from scratch and went to work on finding a way to turn around the franchise. They ended up signing Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch to 6 year deals.

In just 3 years, Kyle and John have completely rebuilt this team and have them one win away from giving the 49ers their 6th Lombardi Trophy. Using a few good draft picks, smart free agent pickups, and a couple of great midseason trades, they turned the franchise around and have it set up to be a contender for awhile. The road to getting to this spot was not easy. Those 1st 2 seasons were not great, but Kyle and John had a plan in place and went out to get the pieces they thought would fit the type of team they wanted to have.

The 2018 season was supposed to be the season that the 49ers were going to get back in contention, but it ended up being another terrible season. But it was what the 49ers needed to get to get to the spot they are currently in. Jimmy’s season ending injury in Kansas City was devastating, but the team finished 4-12, which allowed them to secure the #2 draft pick that turned into Nick Bosa. In the offseason, they signed pass rush specialist Dee Ford and the 49ers had resolved their pass rushing issues with just those two players. Adding Kwon Alexander gave the defense the guy that brings all the energy and an excellent partner for Fred Warner. And in one last move after noticing that the team was in need of a receiving upgrade, the 49ers were able to trade for Emmanuel Sanders, who provided a reliable weapon for Jimmy and took pressure off George Kittle.

It’s been an amazing turnaround from two guys that were questioned when they were hired. Kyle had just been the OC of a team that gave up a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl and his playcalling in holding the lead came up for a lot of justified scrutiny. John Lynch was working games in the TV booth and had never held a front office job. But the 49ers saw something in both of them and hired them. It was definitely the right move and they can put an exclamation point on this brilliant season on Super Sunday.
