Super Bowl week is officially here. The 49ers will take part in their 7th Super Bowl in their history and will look to get a 6th Lombardi Trophy to add to their trophy case. Standing in the way is the Kansas City Chiefs led by an absolute stud of a quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. Patrick won the MVP award in his 1st season starting and almost made the Super Bowl only to lose to the New England Patriots.
In Kyle Shanahan’s 1st draft as the 49ers’ head coach, he had the opportunity to draft Patrick. The 49ers had the #2 overall pick and were in need of a quarterback. They scouted the top quarterbacks in the draft such as Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. But Kyle and the 49ers had other plans. They traded the #2 pick to Chicago to get the #3 pick and 3 other picks so the Bears could draft Mitchell Trubisky, who made a huge mistake with that pick. The 49ers selected Solomon Thomas at #3 and decided to have veteran Brian Hoyer as their quarterback. Brian was only to be a stopgap until the 49ers could get Kirk Cousins who was destined to leave Washington at the end of the season.
Kyle was Kirk’s offensive coordinator in Washington and he was expecting to reunite with him in Santa Clara. They already had a strong relationship and reports had the 49ers as the top destination for Kirk. All that ended when the Patriots traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers midway through the season. Jimmy went on a 5-0 run to end the season and lock up the starting job with a contract extension. A couple of years later, he’s leading the 49ers into Miami for the Super Bowl.
Patrick ended up in Kansas City backing up former 49er quarterback Alex Smith after being drafted. The following year, he torched the NFL for 50 touchdowns to earn the MVP. Both teams are in a good spot with their choices from that draft. Patrick ended up on a perfect team to maximize his talents and the 49ers selected a gem in the 5th round in George Kittle to help transform their offense.
