Everyone’s heard “The Seahawks Cover 3 zone,” but it’s not quite that simple. Pete Carroll has gone 89-54-1 with the Hawks and has run his “Cover 3 Match” for decades. This coverage is essentially a mix of zone and man. Pattern match zone coverages start in zone; then, when a receiver comes into the defender’s area, the coverage becomes man. This helps the defense play tighter coverage on receivers and has helped Carroll stay relevant in the NFL for as long as he has. Kyle Shanahan has faced him for years and knows the ins and outs of that defense and how to exploit it. I detail several of those concepts in this breakdown, including RPOs, switch releases, and certain concepts that helped the 49ers beat the Seahawks in Week 17.
