49ers injury report: Another day of practice without Garoppolo

Moseley remains in the concussion protocol, while Mostert and Greenlaw continue to rehab

The San Francisco 49ers returned to practice on Thursday, and Jimmy Garoppolo was not on hand for the early part of practice where the media is able to watch. That’s likely a signal that we’ll see Nick Mullens in primetime Sunday night against the Eagles.

Deebo Samuel and George Kittle both practiced. Samuel has yet to be activated, and we’ll likely know more about his status for Sunday when Kyle Shanahan speaks Friday afternoon. I’d still guess Samuel misses Sunday night, though there are whispers that he looked fantastic during Wednesday’s practice. The only thing preventing Samuel from playing is being in game shape.

K’Waun Williams was back after missing Wednesday’s practice with a hip injury. That’s good news, as Williams’s drop-off to possibly playing Jamar Taylor in the slot is significant. Williams is one of the best run defenders on the team. Staying with cornerbacks, Emmanuel Moseley remains in the concussion protocol. Chris Biderman tweeted that it looked like Ahkello Witherspoon’s hamstring was acting up again. He was rehabbing during the early portion of practice. With Richard Sherman out another game, the 49ers need one of Witherspoon or Moseley healthy, or that means we’ll see, gulp, Dontae Johnson starting alongside Jason Verrett. The cornerback injuries will be something to monitor as the week goes along.

Thankfully for the 49ers, Philadelphia is just as banged up at wide receiver. The Eagles only had one wideout who was healthy at practice on Thursday.

Also, tight end Chase Harrell has been suspended without pay for six games for violating the NFL Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances. He is eligible for reinstatement on Friday, November 6, following the 49ers’ Week 9 game vs. Green Bay.

Here’s Thursday’s injury report:

DNP: Ford (back), Garoppolo (ankle), Greenlaw (quad), Moseley (concussion), Mostert (knee), Reed (knee)

Limited: Williams (hip), Witherspoon (hamstring)

Full: Kittle (knee), McKinnon (ribs)

Witherspoon was a full-go at practice on Wednesday. That’s the only change, but it could potentially be a big one of Moseley isn’t cleared.
