San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told us on Friday that the team would make a couple of moves at defensive back ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Dolphins. The Niners promoted cornerback Jamar Taylor from the practice squad and activated cornerback Brian Allen and wide receiver Kevin White as well. The other two moves San Francisco made today were placing Ziggy Ansah on the injured reserve and K’Wuan Williams. White and Allen were “flexed,” meaning they’re temporarily moved to the game day roster but will go back on the practice squad after the game. That’s the difference between them and Taylor.
As for the numbers:
WR Kevin White: 14
* CB Ken Webster changed number to 40
* CB Jamar Taylor 47
* CB Brian Allen 48
I’m curious as to how White has progressed during the past month or so in practice. It’s evident that he’s done enough to make an impression on the coaching staff as they could have kept Mohamed Sanu, but the team is rolling with the former first-round pick in White. This also could mean Deebo Samuel’s status is in question for Sunday’s game. We’ll find out when the inactives come out. Richie James Jr. wasn’t activated off the injured reserve, either.
With Richard Sherman, Emmanuel Moseley, and Dontae Johnson all out, the 49ers needed to add bodies at cornerback. Ahkello Witherspoon is questionable with a hamstring injury, but I imagine he’ll play. That means Jason Verrett will make his third consecutive start. If ‘Spoon is active, he’ll start opposite of Verrett. If not, then Webster, I guess? He was on the Dolphins practice squad and has played 11 snaps for the 49ers in the past two games. It’s probable that Taylor is the team’s nickel cornerback with K’Waun out.
