49ers claim CB Parnell Motley off waivers from Tampa Bay

Motley can join the team after he passes three COVID tests. The Niners have an open roster spot, so they won’t have to release anyone.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the San Francisco 49ers have claimed rookie cornerback Parnell Motley off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Motley was an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma this past year. He’s 6’0”, 178 pounds. Motley hasn’t played a defensive down for Tampa Bay this year, but he did appear on special teams during Week’s 4 and 5. Motley reportedly had a good training camp, including having a few interceptions on Tom Brady.

He moves well and has good feet and technique. Motley’s downfall is he’s frail and isn’t an explosive player. He didn’t run well, and his vertical was only 30”. You could see during his college film that Motley lacked a second gear. With that said, he made life a living hell against every college receiver he went against and plays with a ton of confidence. When you can compete, you can play. That’s what Motley brings to the Niners.

This likely signals the end of the road for Brian Allen. Let’s hope the move has nothing to do with Emmanuel Moseley’s status for Sunday’s game. Here’s a look at some clips/threads from Motley during this past draft cycle:
