San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan met with the media Wednesday afternoon to provide a few injury updates. The Niners received good news as cornerback Emmanuel Moseley returned to practice for the first time since he suffered a concussion against the Giants in Week 3. Moseley will wear a blue non-contact jersey. If all goes well, he’ll be on the field Sunday night against the Rams. Los Angeles’s offense is more about deception, rub routes, and scheming receivers open as they don’t have a DeVante Parker who will run right past you or go up and make a play. Moseley being healthy for the rest of the season, is critical for the 49ers playoff hopes.

Shanahan said Jimmy Garoppolo would practice in full on Wednesday. When asked how the team plans to gauge his health, Kyle said, “the only thing we can test more is tackle him to the ground, and that’s not something we’re gonna do.” Shanahan said both Beathard and Mullens would split reps in practice this week if Jimmy can’t go Sunday. Shanahan said he hadn’t decided who will be the backup yet versus the Rams.

Kwon Alexander won’t practice as he has a high-ankle sprain. That means Dre Greenlaw will start, and Azeez-Al Shaair will replace Greenlaw. I asked Fred Warner how big of a loss Kwon would be to the defense, as he was playing some of his best ball:

Kwon, he’s gotten better and better each game. He’s such a big part of what we do on defense as a leader and a playmaker on defense. It’s a huge loss, obviously, but I think guys are ready to step up. We have Dre back healthy. Azeez is experienced and ready to go. I think all three of us and whoever else needs to be used will be ready to go.

If Greenlaw has the same aggression as Kwon against the run, the Niners will be fine. Keep an eye on that, and whether Dre has any lapses in the 49ers zone scheme. Those are the two biggest differences I notice when watching this defense. In man coverage and as far as running sideline to sideline, Greenlaw is superb.

D.J. Jones will be a full go at practice today after being poked in the eye. Cornerback Dontae Johnson will not practice due to a groin injury.
