Can the secondary carry the pass rush?

For the 2019 season, the formula was clear: pound the ball with the run, get a lead, and let the defensive front feast for the rest of the game. A year later without Nick Bosa and Dee Ford, is the reverse true for the 49ers?

Niner Nate and Leo Luna from Sports Illustrated dove headlong into that question in the latest Niners Nation podcast.

Jason Verrett is allowing a passer rating below 10 right now. Emmanuel Moseley has recovered from his concussion and made several strong plays on Sunday Night Football. Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt don’t generate a ton of turnovers, but they also don’t allow a ton of chunk plays down the field. Hopefully K’Waun Williams and Richard Sherman return later in the year as well.

Do you have enough confidence to say the 49ers secondary can keep them in games by shutting down the passing games of Russell Wilson (twice), Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Drew Brees, and more?

Other topics covered:

  • How much will the ground game be hurt by Raheem Mostert being out?
  • Is Deebo Samuel back to being his 2019 self?
  • What do we expect from Jimmy Garoppolo the rest of the season?
