The San Francisco 49ers received good news as left tackle Trent Williams returned to practice Thursday afternoon. There was no Jaquiski Tartt. I’m curious to see if that means we see Tarvarius Moore in the lineup this week.

Though Garoppolo looked better than he did against Miami, it’s hard to call his performance good after watching the tape. Though he might be still feeling the lingering effects of his ankle injury, he threw seven inaccurate passes to wide-open targets that all fell incomplete. On one of his off-target passes, he had pressure in his face but still had enough space to throw to Juszczyk, who had no one within 10 yards of him while he ran a “leak” concept.

Garoppolo’s 2020 season has raised as many questions as it has answered. He’s started four games, but the two he didn’t finish best illustrate the varied takes on where he stands. Beyond staying healthy, Garoppolo must prove he can take the offense to the next level. He’s proved capable of handling many of the short and intermediate throws Shanahan has drawn up but the Niners have largely lacked a downfield passing component.

Last year, Garoppolo led the league in completion percentage on passes thrown 20-plus yards in the air (65.5) but he was also 29th among all quarterbacks in attempts with 29. This year, Garoppolo is 0-for-8 on such throws with two interceptions and his average air yards per attempt is 6.41, tied for third fewest among starting quarterbacks.

No matter how creative Shanahan and his staff are, when a defense can sit on the shorter stuff and the running game, it makes it tough to move the ball consistently.

Hannable: Patriots completely botched quarterback situation by

Looking back now, the Patriots really messed things up by trading Garoppolo in 2017 and not letting things play out into that offseason.

Sure, they wanted to get something in return, but potential franchise quarterbacks don’t grow on trees. The Patriots were in such a great spot when they had both players, especially when it seemed Garoppolo would take over for Brady, but yet they did not play the whole thing out as long as possible.

If Garoppolo wasn’t traded, he would have been an impending free agent when Brady went to Kraft following the 2017 season looking to move on and then wouldn’t all parties involved have agreed to it? Belichick certainly would have as he’s been on record with how much he loved Garoppolo, and then even at the time Kraft listened to Brady at first and was going to allow him to leave.

Meet Bobby Turner: The secret behind 49ers’ run game

Turner has coached alongside Mike and Kyle Shanahan since he got his NFL start, and I know their appreciation for Turner is second to none. Kyle’s attention to and demand for detail is at as high a level as I’ve seen, very similar to his father and Belichick. When you’re wired that way, you must be surrounded by the same type of people, and Bobby’s precision pairs perfectly with Kyle and his vision for the offense. Some might want to point to the Shanahan scheme as the primary driver of their running backs’ production over the years, and there’s no doubt that it has worked wonders a lot of the time. That said, I know that scheme alone doesn’t produce these kinds of results. It takes so much more than that, including a position coach who creates an opportunity for players to be the best version of themselves.

49ers should look into adding former Bills OL Quinton Spain

It’d behoove the 49ers to at least kick tires on the 29-year-old interior lineman. He looked to be on his way to stardom in 2016 when he turned in an excellent year for the Titans. While he hasn’t recaptured the dominance of his 2016 campaign that earned him an 84.2 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, he’s still a capable pass blocker who helped pave the way for some very good rushing performances in Tennessee. Spain over the last three seasons has allowed just one sack in 1,264 pass blocking snaps.

How the Perception of the 49ers Changed Completely in a Week

Last week, the question was, “Who can the 49ers beat?” If they couldn’t beat the Philadelphia Eagles or the Miami Dolphins, just who the hell could the 49ers beat?

Now, after punking the 4-1 division-rival Rams, the question is, “Who in the NFC can’t the 49ers beat?”

We saw what the Green Bay Packers did this past weekend, how they couldn’t even compete against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We saw the 49ers destroy the Packers twice last season. Who’s to say the 49ers won’t beat them again in a few weeks?

And who’s to say the 49ers can’t beat the Rams again?

Seven teams will make the playoffs in the NFC this season. Who’s to say the 49ers won’t be one of them.

I’m saying the 49ers will make the playoffs. Hell, I’m saying they might even make the Super Bowl again, too.
