With safeties Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward hurt, the San Francisco 49ers elevated Johnathan Cyprien and Jared Mayden from the practice squad Saturday. During training camp, Mayden played all over the secondary. He lined up at both safety spots and played outside at cornerback with the third-team defense. There’s a strong chance Mayden plays on all of the special teams’ units for San Francisco Sunday in efforts to keep Tarvarius Moore fresh for defense.

By calling up Cyprien and Mayden, that means San Francisco will roll into New England with three running backs: Jerick McKinnon, JaMycal Hasty, and Jeff Wilson Jr.—an indication that Wilson Jr. is healthy. With Ben Garland on the IR, Daniel Brunskill and Colton McKivitz will serve as the backup centers.

Additionally, the 49ers placed running back Raheem Mostert on the injured reserve. Surprisingly, rookie wide receiver Jauan Jennings was placed on the practice squad injured reserve. I’m not sure when, but Jennings must’ve gotten hurt during practice at some point this past week.

The 49ers still have an open roster spot, but that’ll be filled by edge rusher Jordan Willis, assuming he clears the COVID protocols. He could be in the building as early as Monday.

Cyprien will wear No. 32, while Mayden will wear No. 43.
