Kyle’s update, 12:16 p.m.: The team also released TE Charlie Taumoepeau from the practice squad. That opens up another roster spot on the practice squad. Do you think the team will promote Alex Barrett, or sign a veteran?

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the San Francisco 49ers are releasing veteran wide receiver Mohamed Sanu after three games. Sanu was brought in when the Niners had several injuries at wide receiver. Sanu played 40 snaps total in three games, but only seven against the Eagles.

With Deebo Samuel returning to the lineup and expected to play more and more as he gets into playing shape, and Richie James Jr. likely to be activated this week, there isn’t a need anymore for Sanu, who doesn’t play any special teams. The 49ers receivers moving forward will be Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor, Dante Pettis, and James Jr.

With injuries at edge rusher and cornerback, the 49ers could use Sanu’s roster spot for a position that could help the team right away. It’s not going to be easy to find a player who is available in October, but the 49ers have done their best so far. With K’Wuan Williams going on the short-term injured reserve, expect San Francisco to sign a cornerback with Sanu’s roster spot.
