Kyle’s update, 3:40 p.m.: Trent Taylor showed up on the injury report:

Limited: QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), LB Dre Greenlaw (quadricep), RB Raheem Mostert (knee), WR Dante Pettis (knee), WR Trent Taylor (ankle), CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring)

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media ahead of Wednesday’s practice to provide some key injury updates. The big question that was on everyone’s mind was whether Jimmy Garoppolo would return to practice. Shanahan said Jimmy would be limited, and he’s more optimistic today than he was on Monday. That’s a good sign. Another tell about who would be the Niners QB this Sunday is that the 49ers are 8-point favorites against the Dolphins. If we’re reading between the lines, no way would the Niners be significantly favored over Miami with one of their backup QBs under center.

Shanahan said he decided who would start Sunday if Garoppolo can’t suit up, but he wouldn’t tell us and said we’d have to find out on Sunday like the Dolphins. There’s no real reason for Kyle to share that information. He added that both C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens would both get reps this week during practice just in case.

Richard Sherman remains out and will not practice this week. Shanahan said, “I’d be surprised if he returns this week.” On a podcast with PFF’s Chris Collinsworth, Sherman said, “the plan was for me to practice this week. They’re concerned with the long-term and making sure I’m able to play the whole season, so we’ll see. I’m fighting to get out there when you’re here (Week 6 against the Rams on SNF.)

K’Wuan Williams and Ziggy Ansah will formally go on the IR this week.

Jimmie Ward’s wrist was acting up, so the 49ers are going to hold him out of Wednesday’s practice, Shanahan said. That’ll be something to monitor. Dontae Johnson has been battling a groin injury. He had to tough it out and play through the same injury Sunday night because the 49ers ran out of cornerbacks against the Eagles. Staying with the secondary, Emmanuel Moseley remains in the concussion protocol, while Ahkello Witherspoon will be limited in practice with a hamstring injury. That means your healthy cornerbacks are Jason Verrett, Jamar Taylor, and Ken Webster.

Here is Wednesday’s practice report:
