For the second day in a row, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and running back Raheem Mostert practiced. The beat writers who attended practice all said both players didn’t look hobbled and were moving around well during individual drills, which is fantastic.
Dre Greenlaw, Ahkello Witherspoon, Jimmie Ward, Trent Taylor, and Dante Pettis were all practicing on Thursday. Ward was battling a wrist injury, but Kyle Shanahan said it wasn’t much of a concern on Wednesday. Having Greenlaw back in the lineup would be a big boost as Azeez Al-Shaair had a couple of costly mistakes against the Eagles.
Witherspoon is likely to start in place of Dontae Johnson—missed practice with a groin injury—but I’d imagine Ahkello would play field cornerback while Jason Verrett moves to the boundary. Emmanuel Moseley remains sidelined and in the concussion protocol. He hasn’t practiced since he was injured against the Giants on September 27. I hope everything is OK with Moseley, who the 49ers will likely need at some point this season. We’re probably looking at a cornerback trio of Verrett, Witherspoon, and Jamar Taylor on Sunday.
Deebo Samuel was not on-hand at practice. He said during his media availability on Wednesday that he was a little sore. Samuel was not listed on the injury report on Wednesday. Hopefully, this is the team giving Samuel a “rest” day to protect Deebo—probably from overworking himself, too. Samuel is a ball of energy during his media sessions, and I imagine he practices the same way he plays. As Shanahan said, “we have to be smart with him.” As it turns out, Samuel missed practice due to illness.
Here’s the injury report for Thursday’s practice:
Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
Dre Greenlaw (quadricep)
Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring)
Dante Pettis (knee),
Trent Taylor (ankle)
Jimmie Ward (wrist)
Did Not Practice:
