The San Francisco 49ers announced they placed running back JaMycal Hasty and safety Johnathan Cyprien on the injured reserve. Safety Jared Mayden also was placed on the practice squad injured list. Cyprien and Mayden hadn’t played much this season until Jaquiski Tartt went down with an injury. Now, the 49ers will need to find two more safeties over the next week to come in and replace both players on special teams. Cyprien was injured after two snaps, while Mayden played on four different special teams this past Sunday, totaling 12 snaps.
Hasty showed promise early on, but he hasn’t been able to put together much on the ground thanks to the offensive line. Hasty will finish this season with 39 carries for 148 yards. Only two of those runs went for over 10 yards. To put Hasty’s rushing totals into perspective, 67% of Hasty’s yards came after contact this season. He avoided eight tackles.
NBC Sports Matt Maiocco reported that Kiko Alonso is ineligible to play this season because his practice period expired.
The 49ers put a claim in for Takk McKinley, and his contract was voided Tuesday afternoon after he failed a physical. The Niners have roughly $3.5 million in cap space, per the NLFPA, and they were the next team in line to be awarded McKinley on the waiver wire. I’m curious whether his physical health will make the 49ers change their mind about adding McKinley.
