Well, that was embarrassing.
The San Francisco 49ers came out and laid an egg in the biggest game of the year, losing 37-27 to the Seattle Seahawks. The Niners looked ugly from the opening kickoff. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw an ill-advised interception on a critical third-and-5 that cost the 49ers a chance to put some points on the board.
Russell Wilson and the Seahawks’ offense put this one away after seldom-used receiver Dante Pettis — who head coach Kyle Shanahan has kept in the dog house — was surprisingly called upon to return a kickoff and fumbled, giving Seattle possession on the San Francisco 21-yard line.
The Seahawks scored six players later to go up 27-7, ending any hopes of a Niners comeback. To make matters worse, Garoppolo and tight end George Kittle both left the game with separate injuries and did not return.
Here are some Twitter reactions to the 49ers ugly loss:
The 49ers actually got off to a great start:

What an opening series by #49ers defense: 3-and-out, including sack by K'Waun Williams and limited YAC to Metcalf on 2 receptions
— Cam Inman (@CamInman) November 1, 2020
On a big third down in Seahawks territory, head coach Kyle Shanahan called a terrible play:
Wildcat. Not so wild. Jerick McKinnon gets bottled up quickly.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) November 1, 2020
I think we can all agree that Jerick McKinnon is the worst QB in 49ers history.
— Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows) November 1, 2020
San Francisco got a break when JaMycal Hasty’s fumble was overturned, but things quickly changed:

Put McKinnon back in at QB?

I wish Jimmy Garoppolo was as good at football as he is handsome.

DK Metcalf dominated the 49ers’ secondary:
Touchdown Seahawks. Russell Wilson hits DK Metcalf over the middle and he outruns the entire #49ers secondary to the endzone. Looked like some poor angles and effort their from the defense, some a byproduct of Metcalf's speed. #SFvsSEA

Same here, Kyle:
Kyle Shanahan on Friday: Wish D.K. Metcalf wasn't in the NFC West. #49ers

Inman summed up how bad the 49ers’ offense was in the first half:
#49ers third-down offense:
— Cam Inman (@CamInman) November 1, 2020
-Wildcat run, disaster, -3 yards
-Interception
-Catch short of sticks by Aiyuk
The 49ers held a brief lead:
#49ers with a good response after the turnover and Seattle touchdown. Capped with a 1-yard touchdown run by JaMycal Hasty, the first of his young career.
— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) November 1, 2020
Jaquiski Tartt was hoping it would last:
Keep calm..Niners coming strong

But then Wilson and Metcalf resumed their domination:
DK Metcalf's first half against the #49ers:
— Rob Lowder (@Rob_Lowder) November 1, 2020
6 targets
6 catches
102 yards
2 touchdowns
Despite the ugly first half, the 49ers were only down six and had the ball at the start of the third quarter. The offense lost three yards and went three-and-out:
Ug.

Ly.
Kyle Shanahan's trickery isn't working today. #49ers

I don’t know why Dante Pettis was in the game, but we all saw the result:
Dante Pettis fumbled the kick return and it's recovered by the Seahawks. #49ers
— Rob Lowder (@Rob_Lowder) November 1, 2020
The Seahawks went up 27-7 and the rout was on:
It is difficult to imagine he will get another touch as a member of the #49ers.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) November 1, 2020
The 49ers managed just one yard in the third quarter against the worst defense in the NFL ... one yard:
Seattle's defense entered the game allowing 479.2 yards per contest. It's given up 108 so far.
— Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows) November 1, 2020

— some guy in cyberspace (@cyberspace_guy) November 1, 2020
The Seahawks went on to an easy 10-point win and the hot takes were aplenty:
Injuries on either side shouldn't take away from the biggest storyline of the game that Jimmy Garoppolo played abysmally.
— Joe Fann (@Joe_Fann) November 2, 2020
Feels like this is the day #49ers fans finally turned on Jimmy Garoppolo.

If you're the 49ers, you have to be livid with...
— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) November 1, 2020
*Shanahan's third-down play call on the opening drive that detonated any chance of setting the tone
*Garoppolo's horrendous INT on the second drive that did the same thing
Everything else has played out reasonably as expected
and rookie Javon Kinlaw isn’t impressed with this fan for calling him out:
Kind of weird finishing the game and immediately searching your name on Twitter? pic.twitter.com/jNJaoxKYPI

49ers players are confident they will bounce back:
