Per The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, the San Francisco 49ers are going to waive edge rusher Takk McKinley after examining him this week. McKinley will go on waivers for a third time. Barrows said the 49ers are open to signing McKinley once he’s healthy, but you have to imagine Takk’s groin injury is severe if the team isn’t going to bring him in. The 49ers should recoup the $750,000-ish they used to sign McKinley.

On Thursday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the 49ers were OK with McKinley’s failed physical with the Bengals, and the team was going to see where Takk was at physically. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that McKinley felt more confident that he’d pass his physical for San Francisco.

McKinley would have helped the defense and its pass-rush, but that was assuming he’d be healthy. After two teams have failed McKinley’s physical this week, it’s hard to imagine them giving McKinley another chance this season, unless San Francisco makes a run and Takk is still unclaimed once he’s healthy. We won’t have any updates from Kyle Shanahan on this injury until next Wednesday once he speaks to the media.

The 49ers also announced they placed WR Brandon Aiyuk, LT Trent Williams, and TE Daniel Helm on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. If all goes well, each player should be available for next Sunday’s game against the Rams.
