Kyle’s update, 1:33 p.m.: The 49ers announced they had waived/failed physical LB Kiko Alonso. Based on Alonso’s current injury, I don’t think anyone ever expected he’d play for the Niners this season. The Kwon Alexander trade was more about unloading salary than anything, even the conditional pick.
As for Alonso, maybe he re-signs with the team this offseason on a veteran minimum deal. Then again, if you valued Alonso, you’d hold onto him.
Per NBC Sports Jennifer Lee Chan, the San Francisco 49ers placed defensive linemen D.J. Jones and Jordan Willis on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. That brings the total of current Niners on the COVID list to nine players:
OL Hroniss Grasu
WR Brandon AIyuk
TE Daniel Helm
LT Trent Williams
DT Javon Kinlaw
DT D.J. Jones
DL Arik Armstead
Edge Rusher Jordan Willis
LB Joe Walker
As we’ve noted previously, a player may be placed on this list because he tested positive or if he came in close contact with someone who was infected. With nine players going on the COVID list in a week, the 49ers were wise to close the facilities.
The 49ers submit an injury report every Wednesday, which will be the first time we’ll have an update on which player returns to practice. Neither of the players listed above can practice until they receive two negative tests in a row.
