Stats & Eggs: Shanahan wants to be smart with returning players

Kyle Shanahan met the media yesterday for the first time in around ten days thanks to the bye week. We decided to listen to the whole thing for you, and put the most interesting comments in today’s Stats & Eggs Podcast, as we do every time the 49ers’ head coach holds court.

The most interesting comment came when Shanahan was asked whether he has to ease returning players like Richard Sherman, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, and Deebo Samuel back into things gradually given all the time they’ve missed.

“I’m really hoping that we’ll get Deebo and Raheem back and Jeff Wilson and Sherm this week, but they haven’t played in a while, so we’ve got to be smart with them,” Shanahan said, “The guys who have been playing, they got a lot of rest this last week. So, hopefully their bodies are fresher and stuff...So, we’ve got to be smart.”

With the 49ers’ playoff life on basically on the line this weekend, it will be interesting to see just how much these guys are eased back into action. If Kyle Shanahan truly is as all-in to make the postseason as his previous comments would suggest, I suspect we’ll see heavy doses of Mostert and Deebo. If he knows in his heart-of-hearts that the playoffs aren’t really realistic, I imagine those guys will see far fewer than their normal amount of snaps.
