COVID-19 isn’t the only illness the 49ers are battling in 2020. Jordan Reed, Dre Greenlaw, and Azeez Al-Shaair all missed practice yesterday with an undisclosed illness. If they were to miss Sunday’s game, that would leave the 49ers even more vulnerable against the Rams.

Because of the absences by Greenlaw and Al-Shaair, Fred Warner was the only healthy linebacker on the active roster that participated in practice. That would not bode well against a Rams team that forces disciplined play from linebackers because they rely so heavily on play-action passes. Jonas Griffith is the 49ers’ only linebacker on the practice squad.

Likewise, if Jordan Reed isn’t feeling better by Sunday, Nick Mullens would be down to Ross Dwelley and rookie Charlie Woerner to throw to at tight end. Neither has impressed with his play so far this season. It’s almost like you can’t count on your third and fourth string tight ends to carry the offense or something.

Keep in mind, San Francisco still has seven players on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and Kyle Shanahan did say earlier this week that he doesn’t expect all seven to be back in time to play Rams on Sunday.

It’s very possible the 49ers face yet another week where the players that participate in the game are vastly different than the ones we thought would be available. Time will tell.

For that and everything else that happened in 49ers land yesterday, check out today’s Stats & Eggs Podcast to get up to date on what you need to know in less than five minutes.
