San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media Friday after practice to provide a handful of injury updates. The good news is Deebo Samuel has been cleared, and he is expected to play Sunday. He was not listed on the injury report. Running back Tevin Coleman has been ruled out.
San Francisco opened the practice window for Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr., both of who are listed as questionable for Sunday. Having a trio of Mostert, Wilson Jr., and Jerick McKinnon is ideal and would be quite an upgrade from the backfield that’s been active during the past month.
Tom Compton was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Rams. Shanahan said Compton suffered a concussion during Thursday’s practice, which was a walk-through. I wish I were making that up or that there was a better explanation for how Compton suffered an injury where players practice at half speed. Shanahan said that Colton McKivitz would start in his place.
Richard Sherman is also listed as questionable. The expectation is that Sherm and both running backs would be activated before Saturday’s deadline at 1 p.m. PT.
The 49ers are thinner than expected at linebacker. With Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair missing practice with an illness, Shanahan didn’t sound optimistic that either would suit up versus the Rams. Jonas Griffith is on the practice squad, and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles is the only other linebacker that’s on the roster who is healthy as Joe Walker is on the COVID list. Kyle said, “those are the only three we have.”
Speaking of the Reserve/COVID-19 list, Shanahan said there’s an outside chance that Trent Williams placed, but he hasn’t heard anything on Brandon Aiyuk. So Deebo is back, but Aiyuk is likely out. One step forward...
