Distractions come in all shapes and sizes. Some are internal and are created by a team’s own players or coach. Some are external, and are created when Santa Clara County issues new restrictions banning all contact sports the day before the team leaves on a road trip to play the Rams. Regardless, the best teams compartmentalize things beyond the game at hand, and Kyle Shanahan recognized that in his team on Sunday.
“I’ve got a lot of guys here that can handle anything,” Kyle said, “Very proud of our guys that [even though] I couldn’t give them the answers, that they could put it to the side and come out and play like that. I’m very proud to be those guys’ coach.”
Considering the rash of injuries and the fact that seven players were on the reserve/COVID-19 list coming into the game, it is remarkable that San Francisco’s players ignored the massive elephant in the room on the road against a (now) 7-4 team.
