Every person that has ever coached a football team has told their team that they have to protect the ball. It’s a universal truth across all sports, but especially true in the NFL, where the game is often won by the team that possesses the ball last. For almost half a season, the 49ers have given the ball away like a regifted holiday fruitcake.
With three more freebies on Sunday, San Francisco has committed a mind-numbing 18 turnovers in their last seven games. The biggest culprit? Nicholas Clayton Mullens (and no I did not make that up), who lost the ball on a scoop-and-score, and a pick-six. Big Pick Nick now has 22 turnovers in his 15 career starts. Moreover, he has given the ball away mutliple times in eight of those games, and only 3 career starts without giving the ball to the other team.
