49ers sign WR Matt Cole to a two-year deal

The San Francisco 49ers today announced they had signed WR Matt Cole to a two-year deal.

Cole (5-10, 197) originally entered the NFL after signing with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted rookie free agent on April 29, 2020. He was waived by Miami on September 5 and signed to the team’s practice squad the following day.

A 24-year-old native of Chicago, IL, Cole attended McKendree (IL) University, where he appeared in 42 games (26 starts) and registered 93 receptions for 1,618 yards (17.4 average) and 17 touchdowns to go along with 48 carries for 314 yards and one touchdown on the ground. As a senior in 2019, he started 11 games and finished with 43 receptions for 939 yards (21.8 average) and 12 touchdowns. Cole also had 8 punt returns for 208 yards (26.0 Y/R), one touchdown, and a 100-yard kick return touchdown.

Participating in Northwestern’s pro day, he ran a 4.48 in the 40 and had a 37.5-inch vertical leap.
