49ers injury updates: Deebo Samuel returned to the practice field

Emmanuel Moseley was limited for the second day in a row

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel did not practice Thursday, which had a few fans freaking out thinking that Kyle Shanahan was being coy about an injury. On Friday, Samuel returned to practice.

Samuel looked healthy and fast and was dancing as he always does after each rep. He’ll be good to go Monday night against the Bills.

Emmanuel Moseley was off to the side doing light sprints for the second day in a row. That is not a good sign for the 49ers’ nickel cornerback. The team is already without their top two slot corners in K’Waun Williams and Jamar Taylor. Robert Saleh had high praise for Moseley and what he could do in the slot on Friday: “We’ve been training him there. He’s been getting reps... but there’s a different set of urgency in the slot. We’re very comfortable with Moseley in there.”

Shanahan seems pretty strict with most players that if you don’t practice Thursday (Friday, since the Niners, play on Monday this week), you don’t play. We’ll see if that holds true for Moseley. If he can’t go, then the shuffling begins. Marcell Harris has practiced with the linebackers exclusively this week. There have been all sorts of talk about Richard Sherman playing safety, but he lined up deep for one snap against the Rams. Let’s pump the brakes there.

Jimmie Ward is the “ultimate utility knife,” as Saleh described him, so I’d imagine we see Ward jump down to the slot, or even Tarvarius Moore, if need be, before we start seeing the team shuffle players around. Ahkello Witherspoon has played in the slot sparingly this season and would be an option. The only other cornerback is Donate Johnson.

Here’s Friday’s practice report:

DNP — CB K’Waun Williams (ankle)

Limited — CB Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring),

Full — WR Deebo Samuel (hamstring)

WR Brandon Aiyuk (not injury related)

DT D.J. Jones (not injury related)

DE Jordan Willis (not injury related)
