After each of the seven losses this season, 49ers fans have been quick to bring up how the game would have gone differently if certain injured players were healthy, or the seemingly dumb decisions a coach/player made that cost the team the game in their eyes. After Monday Night’s loss to the Bills, Robert Saleh has taken enough heat to melt the gold off the team’s helmets (from me included). On today’s Shanaplan podcast, Kyle and Akash think that’s a mistake.
“This is a situation where the 49ers’ defense looked helpless, but we have to give credit to the Bills because Josh Allen, Cole Beasley, and Stefon Diggs made a ton of plays,” Posey said, “At times the 49ers were in a great position but most times they weren’t and that’s because the other three made those plays.”
As much as I hate to admit it, they’re right. As a fan, the NFL world orbits around my team. Everything that happens happens in relation to them, but that doesn’t always match up with reality. As is often said, the other side gets paid, too.
Yes, the defense gave up a ton of yards, but that’s because Josh Allen was using his legs, extending plays, and making incredible throws on the run. The defense was doing everything it could, but the Bills’ offense was just playing at a higher level. None of this means that Robert Saleh isn’t an elite defensive coordinator. It just means that on that particular night, he wasn’t better than Bills Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll.
Tip you cap, and get back to work.
