Most of this is speculation. There haven’t been any releases, interest, or anything to indicate that many of the NFL running backs we’re about to talk about might be available. That said, man, Arizona Cardinals’ David Johnson, The Rams’ Todd Gurley, the Falcons’ Devonta Freeman. This is one of the most lucrative groups of running backs I’ve ever seen. And Each one of them could be available in a trade or free agency.
In case you haven’t been following the news, the above names are all connected to reports that their respective teams may be looking to move on from them. Many of them are for a good reason. Todd Gurley has rapidly accelerated the tread on his tires and is due more than his playing time is worth, David Johnson is now second fiddle to Kenyan Drake, and Freeman took a step backward in 2019.
So, should the San Francisco 49ers look at any of them? They have very little cap room. I even suggested they trade draft picks with players to get what precious millions they can so they can keep the free agents they have. They also have King Raheem, Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida, and Jeff Wilson Jr. Oh, and Jerick McKinnon if he sticks around. That’s four names that have been productive in 2019.
Not going to lie though, those names sound mighty tempting. Freeman made a name for himself in Kyle Shanahan’s offense when the latter was in Atlanta. Could Gurley or Johnson upgrade the group?
Really, signing any of them would be very questionable given all the other priority signings the 49ers have, especially when you consider how underrated that group is. That said, do you think the 49ers should take a look at any of these guys should they come available?
