According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the San Francisco 49ers are one of the teams showing interest in free-agent wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, who told Anderson:
“I just want to come in and have a great opportunity to play and showcase how I can really flourish as a player.”
Dorsett caught 30 of his 60 targets with the Patriots in 2019 for 403 yards and five touchdowns. He’s not much of a threat after the catch, which is usually the type of wide receiver Kyle Shanahan favors. Dorsett’s career-high in receptions is 37, and his career-high in receiving yards is 528. The Patriots took shows down the field with Dorsett quite a bit in 2019. He had 13 targets over 20 yards just to the left side of the field. Dorsett had five other targets over 20 yards. Using FootballOutsiders DVOA for wide receivers, Dorsett ranked 46th overall.
I’d rather go the direction of the NFL Draft, but Dorsett wouldn’t break the bank. Also, he’s a younger option than Marquise Goodwin. Dorsett was a first-round pick in 2015, where he ran a 4.33 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. Kyle loves speed at the skill position, so it’s no surprise there is interest.
