Well, that was an entertaining start to the new league year.

The San Francisco 49ers made two big moves to kick off the tampering period, by announcing they have re-signed defensive lineman Arik Armstead to a five-year $85 million deal.

Then, just a short time later came the bombshell that the Niners traded stalwart DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for the No. 13 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Everyone knew the 49ers brass had some tough decisions to make regarding their roster. The team is in win-now mode, and with the success they had in 2019, many of the players are due for big raises.

One of those players was Buckner, who signed an extension with Indy that’ll pay him an average of $21 million per season.

General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan were dealing from a position of strength with their defensive line depth. San Francisco is loaded with talent up front, and it makes sense that it had to sacrifice from the position.

The Niners now have two first-round picks, giving them ammunition to trade back and acquire some more picks, especially considering the team doesn’t have any picks from rounds two through four.

The move makes the draft that much more intriguing for Niners fans.
