Early Wednesday morning, NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported that the Dallas Cowboys had expressed interest in San Francisco 49ers unrestricted free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who trains in Dallas during the offseason and is equally interested in the Cowboys. The 49ers sent two draft picks to the Denver Broncos for Sanders, so letting him walk after half of the season was always going to be a risk. Considering what Sanders brought to the Niners, I do think it was worth the reward.
The signs were there when Sanders changed his Instagram photo from him in a 49ers jersey to just the letter “E.” Later that same day, Sanders dunked on some loser on Twitter for saying Sanders and the Niners aren’t close in contract talks. That led some to believe there is a chance that he comes back to San Franciso. In his tweet, Sanders said there had been no contract talks initiated between him and the 49ers. That’s not a good sign once you get into March. There were always going to be teams that could offer Sanders more money than the 49ers. It was always believed he wanted to continue to play for a contender.
Dallas is a good team, but I don’t know if I’d call them a contender. Not the way that roster is put together, and who is running the team. We’ll keep a close eye on this. I think most of us expect Sanders to walk. I don’t think we expected the Cowboys to be one of the teams to make a run at the two-time Pro Bowler.
